Supported file formats
“What formats are supported” is really three questions: what can be uploaded, what the translation exports to, and what can be converted without translating. The answers differ, so they are listed separately.
The 25 formats file translation accepts
- Documents: PDF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, RTF
- Spreadsheets: XLS, XLSX, XLTX, XLSM, ODS
- Slides: PPT, PPTX, ODP
- Ebooks and web: EPUB, HTML
- Text: MD, TXT, CSV, XML, SRT
- Images: PNG, JPEG, WEBP, GIF, TIFF
The four export formats
Word, PDF, Markdown and EPUB. Which one depends on what happens next: Word to keep editing, PDF to deliver or archive, Markdown for a notes library, EPUB for a reader.
One thing to be clear about: the export format is unrelated to the upload format. A PPTX or XLSX still exports as one of those four rather than coming back as a PPTX. When you need the original format back, use format conversion instead.
Layout-preserving mode is the exception: it is PDF-in, PDF-out, and the result matches the original layout.
Changing format without translating
Format conversion supports ten pairings: PDF to Word or Markdown; Word to PDF, EPUB or Markdown; EPUB to PDF, Word or Markdown; PPT to PDF; Markdown to Word.
The source format is detected on upload and only the targets that file can actually become are offered, so nothing is rejected after the fact.
Frequently asked questions
If I upload a PPT, do I get a PPT back?
No — the translation exports as Word, PDF, Markdown or EPUB. For a deck, use presentation generation, which produces an editable PPTX from a document.
Which category does a scanned PDF fall into?
The recognition path. It has no text layer, so it goes through AI reflow — recognised first, then translated, and billed at the recognition rate.
How large can one file be?
The cap depends on your plan, and the upload page shows the figure for your current tier.
Why is the target format I want greyed out?
Conversion targets are narrowed by the source format, and only the ten pairings above exist. That way whatever you can pick actually works.
Can password-protected files be uploaded?
Encrypted or DRM-protected files cannot be parsed. Remove the protection first or use an unprotected copy.
How are CSV and SRT billed?
Through the local parsing path at 1,600 characters a page: 8 credits a page on high precision, 2 on standard.
